From the age of 15 I always dreamed of one day owning and building my dream Defender, and 13 year later, I’ve managed to complete it. I search for months waiting for the right Defender to come up, and then beginning of April 2024 I purchased this Defender. This was purchased from a lovely family around the Southampton area, and was used by a very well respected thatcher who very sadly passed away, the family kept hold of it off the road for a while before deciding to sell it. It had been dry stored for the entire duration of their ownership, this Defender has NEVER had any welding done whatsoever.
Once I had it, I then started the full strip down for the rebuild, removed the tipper part, steam cleaned the entire chassis, wire brushed every single bit of surface rust off, this took me days, everything was stripped, axles, every bracket, bushing the lot, and I wanted to do a complete and proper rebuild. The rear cross member had gone through in a couple of places, so thought it made sense to replace this, so I purchased a new heavy duty rear cross member, and had this installed.
I have 450 photos or so of every part of the build I can share, so you can really see how far I went with this project.
Once the chassis was cleaned 100%, I then used Dinitrol RC900 rust converter (amazing stuff) and then finished it using Dinitrol 4941 paint/ wax. I also did all the suspension parts, axles, A-frame, link arms, tank brackets, tipper body, radius arms, etc, everything that wasn’t being replaced was cleaned and coated. As I built it back up, I then installed all new brackets, bushings, fixings, all new upgraded suspension, etc.

This is only the main parts, there is a lot more
It has a Stage 2 remap completed by Empire Tuning, very well respected TD5 tuner, I say stage 2, but he custom remaps everything depending on the health and what you wanted to achieve, its remapped mainly for torque than power, has had the rev limit reduced to 4200RPM and does have a popcorn limiter too.
This defender gets so much attention and the amount of people who comment on it about how good she looks
The rear air bags are brilliant, these are NOT cheap ones from online, these are Peddars, who make all the air bag kits for the trucks over in New Zealand etc who work in mines, I also went for the Kevlar sleaves, which means they can take more pressure and protects them from anything that could damage them, you can adjust the pressure using the 2 Schrader valves just above the fuel filler cap, I use an 18 volt battery compressor, little Makita one, takes seconds and works so so well, it’s genuinely so impressive. And then when unladen, I just drop the pressure right down again.
I’ve had the rear cage custom adapted into 2 sections, so I can carry 2 separate log deliveries at a time, each one is 2 cube. The middle section will lift all the way up against the bulk head, and you can bolt it in place if you wanted to chip into the back of it. The high sides all come off, and there is also a normal height rear rail gate included too. I also have a roof rack for it that came with it, you can have this with the Defender.
Also fitted a little Daken storage box behind the drivers door I use for straps etc, and finishes that side perfectly.
Look at the interior, it’s absolutely amazingly clean for a Defender, yet alone a commercial one, this has been carried for SO well her entire life. It is also a very rare spec, it has remote central locking, heated windscreen, heated seats and electric windows, this is very rare indeed for a commercial spec one. The heater works too!
I have fitted a wireless remote for the tipper, so you can be at the back with the remote while it tips, which is great. I have also installed a decent quality reversing camera, I have fitted this in line with the tow ball, so you can reverse and see exactly where you need to be to hitch a trailer up.
Once the work was completed, we then fully serviced it, including the transfer box, diff oils etc
There is a couple of things that need looking at still and completing, cruise control isn’t working, I believe it’s just a loose wire, passenger door hinges need adjusting so it shuts nicer, as you have to give it quite a push, when you look it using the remote central locking, the alarm goes off after about 4 hrs, I lock it using the key, no issues at all.
I have the original handover pack too including the radio key, Defenders owners handbook etc. Also the paperwork for the tipper body/ install
Service history;
8893 miles
21119 miles
305138 miles
33444 miles
43932 miles
54237 miles
All servicing was done by the owner after that, he even used the remove the clean out the EGR valve, I have a photo of it, when I removed it, it was absolutely spotless, not a bit of soot on it whatever. I have 2 sets of keys
Current MOT with no advisories, expires 23rd October 2025
I have only done 700 miles since the full rebuild.
